How I Created a Whimsical Enchanted Forest Playroom on a Budget

When we moved into our home in 2023, one of the spaces I was immediately excited about was the loft at the top of the stairs. I knew it would make the perfect playroom for our daughter and, hopefully someday, the second child we dreamed of having.

What I didn’t know was what I actually wanted the space to look like.

I wasn’t ready to commit to a color palette or theme, so for the first couple of years the playroom stayed pretty plain. Toys accumulated, furniture was added as we needed it, and I would occasionally give it a little life with seasonal decor. But there was never really a plan.

And eventually, it showed.

When I Finally Had Enough

Fast-forward to January 2026. I was taking down the Christmas decorations when I looked around the playroom and finally had enough of the hodgepodge in this space.

By this point, we had a five-year-old and a one-year-old using the space, and I wanted it to feel like it actually belonged to them. I wanted something colorful, playful and whimsical, while still looking intentional since the loft is completely open and visible from the rest of our upstairs.

So, naturally, I started brainstorming.

My ideas bounced between bright geometric shapes, colorful cottage vibes and an enchanted forest. But when I remembered how many mushrooms, mossy accents and woodland-inspired pieces I had saved from my oldest daughter’s fourth birthday party, the enchanted forest theme felt like a no-brainer.

And just like that, I finally had a direction.

Starting With a Color Palette

Rather than picking a paint color first, this room actually started with the curtains.

I found the cutest bright and airy colorful curtains on Amazon and used those as the jumping-off point for the entire room. Originally, I thought I was going to go bold with a golden yellow on the walls.

Then I remembered who I am. Committing to that much yellow felt like…a lot.

So I went back to one of my tried-and-true favorites: green. I chose a couple of different shades that gave me the color I wanted while still feeling soft, earthy and connected to the enchanted forest theme.

This is one of my favorite ways to approach a room refresh when I’m feeling overwhelmed by all of the choices. You don’t have to design the entire room at once. Pick one thing you love and let the rest of the room grow from there.

For me, it was the curtains.

The DIY Scalloped Stairwell

One thing I really wanted to figure out was how to transition from the playroom into the stairwell.

Because the loft sits right at the top of the stairs, simply stopping the paint at the corner felt unfinished. I went back and forth with different ideas until I decided on a scalloped painted border.

And because I love an inexpensive DIY, I used a paper plate to create the scallops.

Yes. A paper plate.

It gave me the playful transition I was looking for without needing a stencil or any fancy tools, and it turned out SO cute. It’s one of those little details that makes the room feel custom even though it cost practically nothing to create.

Finding the Perfect Whimsical Wallpaper

Once the curtains arrived, I could finally see all of the colors I was working with in the room.

That made choosing wallpaper so much easier.

I started searching for a peel-and-stick wallpaper that would connect the colorful palette with the enchanted forest theme and found the cutest mushroom pattern. Even better, it incorporated so many of the same colors found in the curtains.

Suddenly everything started to feel cohesive.

That’s something I’ve learned through decorating our home: a room doesn’t necessarily need everything to “match.” It just needs a few repeating colors, textures or details that make everything feel connected.

The curtains, green paint and mushroom wallpaper each had their own personality, but together they finally made the room feel intentional.

Adding Whimsy With Affordable Artwork

Next came one of my favorite parts: curating the artwork.

I spent way too much time browsing Etsy for digital artwork featuring fairies, woodland creatures, flowers, butterflies and all of the magical little details that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a storybook.

Digital downloads were also a great budget-friendly option because I could choose exactly what I wanted, print them myself and spend more of the budget on frames.

I kept some of the frames neutral to play on the woodsy, earth tones, but also leaned into the color to keep it bright, whimsical and inviting.

I chose bright, colorful frames that pulled shades from the curtains, wallpaper and other elements throughout the room. This ended up being one of the details that added the most personality to the walls.

The artwork didn’t have to be expensive to make an impact. It was really about layering colors and finding pieces that made the room feel imaginative and fun for the girls.

Styling the Shelves

Styling the shelves was the final detail that really polished off the room.

I didn’t want them to feel overly styled or precious because, at the end of the day, this is still a playroom.

Kids live here. Toys move. Things get messy.

But I also wanted to add enough decorative pieces that the shelves felt like part of the room instead of simply a place to store things.

One of my favorite additions was a little fairy moss garden I made using a stump-looking planter I found at Hobby Lobby. I added moss and whimsical details to turn it into something that looked like it belonged right inside our enchanted forest.

I also reused decor we already owned whenever I could, especially pieces left over from birthday parties and other events. Repurposing what you already have is one of the easiest ways to make a room feel completely different without spending a fortune.

A Playroom That Finally Feels Like Us

The funny thing is, I started this project because I was tired of looking at a messy, mismatched playroom.

But I ended up realizing something else.

When you put time and effort into making a space feel beautiful, functional and intentional, you actually want to take better care of it.

Now, not only do I love looking into this room every time I walk to and from our bedroom, but I’m also much more motivated to reset it and keep it organized.

Is it perfectly clean all the time?

Absolutely not.

There are still two little girls playing in here, after all.

But now everything has a place, the room has a personality, and even when toys inevitably end up everywhere, it doesn’t feel like the overwhelming hodgepodge it once was.

And most importantly, I created it without completely starting over or spending a fortune.

A few cans of paint, peel-and-stick wallpaper, colorful curtains, inexpensive digital artwork, some DIY projects and decor we already owned completely transformed the space.

Sometimes refreshing a room isn’t about buying all new things.

It’s about finally giving the things you already have a little direction.

And now our once-plain loft has become the colorful, whimsical enchanted forest playroom I didn’t even know I was envisioning when we first walked through this house three years ago.
